Give Back Activities
To do our part in protecting our Lowcountry waterways, the Palmetto Paddle is coordinating with local organizations to organize "Give Back Activities" for anyone to attend. These activities not only let people donate their time and effort to protecting our Lowcountry waterways but also provide them an opportunity to enjoy some time in nature.
Crab Bank Cleanup
March 12, 2016 @ 2:00pm - 4:30pm
1 Shrimp Boat Ln, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464

Come join the Palmetto Paddle community for an afternoon of paddling and cleaning up Crab Bank Bird Sanctuary, an important nesting site on our Lowcountry coastline. There are only five islands in South Carolina where Brown Pelicans, Royal Terns, and Sandwich Terns nest. Seabird sanctuaries like Crab Bank are critical for the survival of these iconic coastal birds. While it is always important to play our part with cleaning up our Lowcountry waterways, it is critical to clean up Crab Bank before it closes for the breeding nesting season starting on March 15.
We’re partnering with Nature Adventures Outfitters on this event and will be launching from their store located on Shem Creek. It will be around a 1.5 mile round trip paddle. NAO can provide some kayaks but it is recommended to bring your own watercraft (e.g. kayak, outrigger canoe, paddleboard) and PFD. Dress in layers, bring water, and your waterproof cameras. We’ll meet at Nature Adventure Outfitters on Shem Creek at 2:00pm to pass out our cleanup supplies and then paddle out to Crab Bank Island. Come be part of the solution and have a great paddling afternoon on Shem Creek.
To join the event, sign-up for the event on Facebook. Please include in your comments if you’ll be bringing your own watercraft or will need to borrow one from NAO. Also, this will help us plan out the amount of supplies we’ll need.

"Trashy Monday" Brittlebank Cleanup
June 20, 2016 @ 6:00-7:30pm
0 Lockwood Blvd, Charleston, SC 29403
Charleston Paddle Club, Dragonboat Charleston, and Keep Charleston Beautiful are partnering to clean up Brittlebank Park along the Ashley River. Come join in on the fun, Monday, June 20th 6:00pm. Bring your own kayak, paddleboard, prone board, or any other watercraft to help us clean up our lowcountry waterways. Researchers at Citadel estimate there are 7.5 tons of plastic in our Charleston harbor. Together we can make a difference.
Don't have a watercraft? Come on down anyways and we will also have a cleanup effort going on the land. Bring work gloves and a reusable bottle of water to help us clean up litter on land before it turns into marine debris. 80% of marine debris washes into the sea from land. Every piece of litter removed could be a life saving move for our local wildlife. Let's do our part and decrease the amount of trash in our parks and waterways.
